Red Cheeks Circus

Miss Van & Anaoana’s “Red Cheeks” collection is based in the aesthetics and concepts of cabaret and circus shows. The old school style is embellished with a layer of makeup treated more as a mask than a simple touch up. We discover animals in the place of men, embodying their masculinity. The bright colors crown this multicolored world reflecting the joy of it all. At times it may be dramatic and exaggerated and at times heartwarming and comedic, but more often than not it will melt the two together while always remaining feminine, delicate, and sensitive.
Consequently the fit and fabrics used in the collection are as varied as the characters themselves: short and wide, tall and thin, or any mix of the above.
Finally the circus is brought to life in the unveiling of the characters dressed in all their glory. Their portraits are shot in a style evocative of the early days of the modern circus, presenting our exotic protagonists with all of their curiosities and oddities while remaining remarkably familiar. In this intimate setting behind the curtain they are able to reveal their peculiarities as well as their charm, beauty, and humanity.

“Red Cheeks” is divided into two distinct collections, the classic and the limited.
In the classic we have t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other accessories printed in black as well as color and for both for men and women.
The limited collection is where the most artistic and creative pieces emerge from this collaboration between miss van & anaoana. It could be said that this is the where the true heart of the collection lies. The variety in each piece is born from the spontaneous and fleeting moments of creation between the two artists yet take their inspiration in the timeless acts of day to day life.

Limited is a collection where each article emanates its own personality, evolution and contrast to one another. Each new creation contributes its own fresh appeal to the collection as a whole. In this way it represents the deepest wishes and creative whims of both artists. Limited is comprised of exclusive and limited edition accessories and garments made to order.

FREAKS

The genesis of MGM’s Freaks was a magazine piece by Ted Robbins titled Spurs. The story involved a terrible revenge enacted by a mean-spirited circus midget upon his normal-sized wife. In adapting Spurs for the screen, writers Willis Goldbeck, Leon Gordon, Edgar Allan Wolf, and Al Boasberg retained the circus setting and the little man-big woman wedding, all the while de-vilifying the midget and transforming the woman into the true « heavy » of the piece. German « little person » Harry Earles plays Hans, who falls in love with long-legged trapeze artist Cleopatra (Olga Baclanova). Discovering that Hans is heir to a fortune, Cleopatra inveigles him into a marriage, all the while planning to bump off her new husband and run away with brutish strongman Hercules (Henry Victor). What she doesn’t reckon with is the code of honor among circus freaks: « offend one, offend them all. » What set this film apart from director Tod Browning’s earlier efforts was the fact that genuine circus and carnival sideshow performers were cast as the freaks: Harry Earles and his equally diminutive sister Daisy, Siamese twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, legless Johnny Eck, armless-legless Randian (who rolls cigarettes with his teeth), androgynous Josephine-Joseph, « pinheads » Schlitzie, Elvira, Jennie Lee Snow, and so on. Upon its initial release, Freaks was greeted with such revulsion from movie-house audiences that MGM spent the next 30 years distancing themselves as far from the project as possible. For many years available only in a truncated reissue version titled Nature’s Mistakes, Freaks was eventually restored to its original release print.

Belonging to a well-situated family, Charles Albert Browning (Tod) fell in love at the age of 16 with a dancer of a circus. Following her began his itinerary of being clown, jockey and director of a variety theater which ended when he met D.W. Griffith and became an actor. He made his debut in Intolerance: Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916). Working later on as a director, he had his first success with The Unholy Three (1925) (after about 25 unimportant pictures) which had his typical style of a mixture of fantasy, mystery and horror. His biggest hit was the classic Dracula (1931), in which he also appears as the voice of the harbor master.
